(English) THE GEOPOLITICAL IMPORTANCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF RIO GRANDE Past, present and future

The Republic of Rio Grande marks a little-known episode (which we must make known) in the geopolitical history of Mexico and the United States. Proclaimed in Laredo on January 17, 1840, this independence movement was led by men such as Jesús de Cárdenas and Antonio Canales Rosillo, as a direct reaction to the CENTRALISTIC and AUTHORITARIAN

POLICIES (in Mexico, almost two hundred years later, the same policies are still being employed with centralism disguised as federalism) imposed by General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who hadsuppressed the federalist Constitution of 1824.

The republic encompassed the territories of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, regions that shared a common identity marked by their distance from the Mexican political center and their proximity to the United States, especially the Republic of Texas. Despite its short-lived existence, its geopolitical    influence transcended the limits of its time, leaving behind ideals of freedom and courage.

Military    and    Political Leadership: Generals Canales and Zapata

Antonio Canales Rosillo became the most prominent military figure in the Republic of Rio Grande, contributing considerable        military experience and a strategic vision that proved crucial to the initial survival of the independence    movement. This figure has been virtually forgotten for almost two centuries, his country of origin, Mexico, has practically exiled him from the history books, and it seems that in the republic he founded, since in the Rio Grande Valley, which includes Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo, Starr County, Zapata, among others, THERE IS NO MONUMENT TO HONOR HIS    STRUGGLE    FOR FREEDOM AND COURAGE AGAINST A TYRANNY AS DESTRUCTIVE AS THAT OF ANTONIO LOPEZ DE SANTA ANNA.

His military training and knowledge of the Rio Grande Valley allowed him to organize the republican armed forces and design war tactics that took advantage of the region's geographical advantages. which is why that idealism must be revived today. In our times, there is a LACK OF LEADERS. GENERAL    ANTONIO

CANALES, by taking the initiative to found a republic in three states that are so important today in the neighboring    country    of MEXICO, was truly an act of pure heroism. WILLIAM WALLACE (BRAVEHEART) is

nothing compared to the courage shown by THE MAN WHO HAS BEEN RENAMED IN THESE MODERN TIMES AS    “GENERALISIMO ANTONIO CANALES.”

“General Antonio Canales' leadership was characterized by a combination of political pragmatism and military determination that kept the republican and federalist cause alive during the most critical moments.”

On the other hand, GENERAL ANTONIO ZAPATA (another great forgotten hero) played an equally important role in the military structure of the republic, especially in guerrilla operations and the organization of local resistance. His intimate knowledge of the regional geography and his connections with local communities made him an effective leader for decentralized    military operations.

General Antonio Zapata developed innovative military strategies   that   combined conventional tactics with irregular warfare methods, adapting to the resource and personnel constraints faced by the republic. His ability to maintain troop morale and organize    civil    resistance contributed significantly to the prolongation of the conflict and the temporary consolidation of republican territory.

Both generals shared a political    vision    that transcended purely military interests, as they understood that the success of the republic depended not only on victories on the battlefield, but also on the development of legitimate political institutions and the support of the civilian population. This understanding led them to participate actively in the organization of the provisional government and in the formulation of public policies. These leaders, who truly emanated from the people, understood the feelings of the nation they were building in the face of a TYRANNY    THAT    WAS TAKING PLACE IN THE CENTER  OF  MEXICO  (does that sound familiar? Four letters of the alphabet T). The courageous actions of these two figures in the past must be recognized in the present, given the importance of the movement, as the inhabitants of  the RIO GRANDE VALLEY have a historical legacy of bravery, dignity, pride, and nationhood left to them by Generals ANTONIO CANALES and ANTONIO ZAPATA.

"The collaboration between these military leaders demonstrated the importance of collective leadership in complex political movements, as their different strengths and approaches complemented each other to create an effective command structure that maximized the republic's limited resources and maintained the cohesion of the movement during its brief existence. Although short-lived, the movement is unique in history, as very few had the courage to confront the most sinister villain in Mexican history, Antonio López de Santa Anna.¨

The significance of the founding of the REPUBLIC OF RIO GRANDE must be recognized, as its heirs, the people of the Valley, are leaders contribution to the telling of this great story. On the contrary, it has been abandoned, so much so that right in front of what was the capitol of the REPUBLIC OF RIO GRANDE, in San Agustín Square, there is a statue of GENERAL  IGNACIO ZARAGOZA. It is unknown why it is located in such an emblematic and historic square, although the general was born in the state of Coahuila y Texas (the latter, ironically, was the poorest state in the nascent Mexican Republic), and his family lived in Matamoros, a key city in the Republic of Rio Grande. However, he had nothing to do with the movement led by Generals Antonio Canales and Antonio Zapata in the founding of the Republic of Rio Grande.

Contemporary Relevance and    Proposals    for Recognition

The cities of Laredo, McAllen, Brownsville, Zapata, Hidalgo, and other communities that were part of the territory of the REPUBLIC  OF  RIO  GRANDE could benefit economically from the development of commemorative projects that recall this historical heritage and promote cultural tourism. This would create new employment    opportunities while preserving history and making it known worldwide. The port of Laredo is one of the nine most important in the world (the flag of the Republic of Rio Grande would fly spectacularly on the five international bridges of Laredo), which would instill a sense of patriotism in children and adolescents about the place where they are growing up, with the aim of creating new leaders and good citizens.

These projects could include the remodeling of the museum, the remodeling of San Agustín Square, the construction of monuments   to   Generals Antonio Canales and Antonio Zapata, and the celebration of local educational and school festivals with an emphasis on this independence movement, which is clearly “historic.”

In particular, the celebration of the 186th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the republic in 2026 offers an exceptional opportunity to organize    commemorative events in BROWNSVILLE, MCALLEN, LAREDO, STARR COUNTY,  ZAPATA,  AMONG

OTHERS,    thereby strengthening cultural ties and advancing understanding of shared regional history. These events could include academic meetings, historical exhibitions, and celebrations for the general public.

In addition, the creation of a historical park in one of the cities described in the preceding paragraph, which would preserve important sites related to the republic, could serve as a model for further international cooperation in the preservation of historical heritage, while also producing economic benefits for local communities        through education    and     cultural tourism.  Such  a  rich  and  wonderful history should not be wasted. Finally, the establishment of academic    and    research programs interested in the study of the Republic of Rio Grande and its cultural legacy could contribute to a better understanding of the history of independence and provide valuable educational resources for future generations, while strengthening  formal connections    between universities and research centers in the cross-border region.

The Republic of Rio Grande, despite its short existence, is an extraordinary testimony to the geopolitics of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries; its legacy transcends            the            purely historical realm to become a symbol    of            democratic resistance        and        regional autonomy that continues to resonate in contemporary border communities.

The recognition and study of this republic not only enriches our understanding of the past, but also offers valuable lessons about leadership, honor, regional identity, and the importance of preserving historical memory as a foundation    for    future development.

In the current context, where borders continue to be spaces of encounter and tension, THE HEROISM OF GENERALS ANTONIO CANALES AND ANTONIO ZAPATA IN THE FOUNDATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF RIO GRANDE reminds us that history, above all, is a story of resistance, adaptation, struggle against tyranny,    and    political creativity that deserves to be celebrated and studied in depth.

PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE REPUBLIC OF RIO GRANDE.

The recent approval by President Donald J. Trump of the expansion of the SOLIDARIDAD-COLOMBIA

BRIDGE, which will benefit the entire RIO GRANDE VALLEY region, leading to the surpassing of the 2023 figure of

$300 billion in trade volume in Laredo, and positioning the bridge as the third busiest in the   UNITED   STATES  OF

AMERICA. The importance of investing even more in historical tourism in Laredo is of great importance, which is why it is proposed that two of the five international bridges be named after ANTONIO CANALES   and   ANTONIO

ZAPATA, and why not? Given their leadership and the fact that the centralist policies that triggered the independence movement are still in force today (disguised as a federation), President Donald J. Trump can refound the Republic of Rio Grande, reviving the ideals of Generals Canales and Zapata. CLAIM THE STATES OF NUEVO LEÓN, COAHUILA,        AND TAMAULIPAS AS PART OF THE    UNION     (RIO GRANDE REPUBLIC) AND THUS        EMPOWER LAREDO as the capital OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GEOPOLITICAL ZONE IN THE WORLD.
